Kristina Yakovleva: “It is important for me that the models feel comfortable working with me”

I started wearing makeup at the age of 11, guided by fashion photographs. I am interested not only in makeup, but also in how it will work on specific faces and in photographs, how everything will look together. We asked Kristina (@yakovleva.muah) to share her impressions of working with models.

1. What is important to you when working with a model?

Establish contact, including on set. In our industry, in my opinion, 99% are very nice friendly people with whom everything happens naturally. It is important for me that the models feel comfortable with me, so I work carefully and according to the “do no harm” principle. I like to arrive early and prepare the work area, so everything is fine and ready to go when the model arrives. I think it’s important to communicate with the model, since the mood for the shoot is set during the preparation process.

2. What unpleasant situations happened while working with a model and how did you get out of them?

I’m sure I’m lucky to have worked with good people. But there was one case with an ill-mannered model who thought that she knew it all and she did not communicate well. I don’t take this behaviour personally because I am confident in my work. In addition, in our field many people know each other, maybe next time such models may simply not be invited to projects.

3. What is your makeup inspiration?

From watching movies. Furthermore, I can’t say that I am inspired by any specific movie. I am rather inspired by my state after watching, when I see something that I would not have thought of myself. This is a kind of sensory overload that helps you extract from your subconscious a mix of everything you saw and heard: then you develop your own collage of ideas.

4. What advice would you like to give to models for fruitful collaboration?

One piece of advice – don’t look at your phone while doing makeup. The makeup artist has a specific time to meet. Sitting on the phone directly affects head position, model engagement, and ease of use.
