Svetlana Andreychenko: “Ideality is in uniqueness”

All models probably have their favourite makeup artist, someone with whom makes you feel definitely beautiful and where you leave in a good mood. Your favourite makeup artist has a lot of useful jars, always clean tools, new products and the makeup lasts for a long time. You want to look in the mirror in the evening and not want to wash off such beautiful work. She/he is rarely late, does not delay the studio time and at the same time knows how to listen like a psychologist. Are all these qualities ample for the proud title of “The perfect makeup artist” or is there something more? Let’s reflect on this with the founder of the Remake Community makeup school (@remakeschool), make-up artist Svetlana Andreychenko (@s_andreychenko):

“Just having clean brushes in this profession and making perfect shading, in my opinion, alas, is not enough. A makeup artist today is a beauty guide with a rich inner being and charisma. And despite many misconceptions, charisma is something that can and should be developed. The ideal makeup artist is to make the client feel perfect at the end. There have been many cases when the makeup was really at a high level for others, but the client would leave disappointed. The client first of all wants to feel unique.

Nowadays, the philosophy of this profession is “cleaning”. Being a makeup artist at one time became very popular and the profession was inundated with people making money from it. Now they are strongly filtering out because it has become much more difficult to earn money as just clean brushes and a stylish look do not interest the client, you need something more. You are chosen for the complexity of your uniqueness, features.

When a big client engages myself or my team (shooting a look book or a production centre), I already understand in advance that I need to provide the full range of luxury. My additional skills of an organiser are also connected here: sociability and the ability to avoid awkward situations. Now the distinctiveness is still very developed: every makeup artist honours his personal space, his personal comfort and therefore is his “I”, which, as often happens, is most important. If this prevails over all the others, it will be difficult to become an ideal master.

As for the quality of cosmetics, we are very different from the markets of Europe and Asia as we do not produce products ourselves and we have very small lines. There are no laboratories, no research and the brands are mostly imported. Nevertheless, makeup artists can choose a lot for the client where the quality of the product will play a key role. The client today knows a lot himself and is well versed in cosmetics. The makeup artist’s case should not consist only of promoted brands. It should have smart, working products as this suggests that the makeup artist is not indifferent to what products to work with.

All these puzzles eventually add up to the perfect picture that the client wants to see.”
